Still Waiting for the Perfect Twitter App

On my Droid, I'm currently bouncing back and forth between 3-4 different Twitter apps.  There are several great Twitter apps available, and most of them are free, but I'm still looking for what I would consider to be the "perfect" Twitter app.

The main app I use is Twidroid.  It does a lot of things well and probably has the most features available in an Android Twitter app.  I really like the image preview that saves from having to open the full browser for every picture.  Remembering my timeline position is also a must-have feature.  I also like the native retweet, and the option to also retweet with comments.  Twidroid's shortcomings to me start with the lack of ability to "reply all." Reply all is a great feature on a phone where it can be more difficult to type out additional usernames.  Also, Twidroid doesn't run completely smoothly on the Droid. Sometimes the scrolling lags, and I've accidentally favorited/retweeted tweets that I didn't intend to due to lag.

I also have Seesmic installed, right now solely for the reply all function.  Seesmic's user interface takes up too much screen real estate to ever be my main choice, and Seesmic also lacks the ability to remember where I was in the timeline when I close the app.  Seesmic also has issues with the new retweet feature.

Tweetcaster is a new Twitter app available for Android.  I love the interface, but the features leave something to be desired.  It does remember timeline position, but it will only load 49 new tweets at a time, and there is no option to change that number.  I would have to check for new tweets every 30 minutes or so to see every tweet without having to click "load more" constantly.  Also, Tweetcaster is lacking the reply all function.

The last Twitter app on my Droid is Twicca. Twicca is fairly new to the Android Market, and is officially listed as a beta application.  Twicca does require Android 1.6+, so it doesn't work yet on the HTC Droid Eris or HTC Hero.  Twicca is light and fast, yet does have a lot of great features. My favorite feature is the ability to color-code users.  This allows me to group the people I follow and find the more relevant tweets easily.  Twicca also runs very smoothly and has a simple, small interface; this makes the tweets the focus of the app, not the interface itself.  If Twicca had the ability to remeber your position within the feed, I probably would switch to it full-time.

I've also tried many of the others on the market: Swift, TwitterRide, etc., but none of them made the cut to stay on my phone.

So now that I've explained the pluses/minuses of the apps, I'd like to list out the features of my "perfect" Twitter app.

  • Remember my position in the timeline - I will not go solely to an app that does not remember where I left off reading.  I check my timeline every hour or two, and it's a pain to remember where I left off and scroll back down to it, only to scroll up again while I'm reading.
  • Native retweet, and retweet with comments - The native retweet function is a must have.  I like how it works, and it makes it easy to pass on an interesting tweet while giving full credit to the person who wrote it.  I could live without the retweet with comments option, but it is a nice bonus as well.
  • Reply all - There are many conversations on Twitter that involve multiple people.  The ability to reply to all users in a tweet is very handy, especially on a mobile device.
  • Minimal User Interface - Twitter is about the tweets, not the interface on the phone.  I'm looking for an interface that is functional, but small and simple.  Twidroid and Twicca do this well.  Seesmic and Tweetcaster have too much interface, and not enough tweets.
  • Smooth Scrolling - Some apps scroll well, others don't.  Obviously, I want one that scrolls through tweets smoothly and won't cause me to do things accidentally.
  • Image Preview - I'll tag this as a "would be nice" feature.  Twidroid does this well, and Seesmic does it for certain sites.  The nice thing about Android, is I can tell it to use the Twidroid image preview regardless of which Twitter app I'm using, so there's an easy workaround.

I don't think what I'm asking for is too much.  There's a twitter app on the Android Market that meets each one of these conditions, there just aren't any that meet all of the conditions.  When one does, I'll ditch the rest and make it my only.  I'll also send $10 to the developer on top of any market costs.  I know that's not much in the grand scheme of things, but I would think I'm not the only one who would pay for these features.  So all you Android developers, get on this!
